Every child deserves the chance to read.

Reading is not just a skill. It is the foundation of learning, confidence, and opportunity. When children can read, they are better able to learn, to imagine, and to shape their own futures. Yet for millions of children living in remote communities, that chance is still out of reach.

In remote areas of Cambodia, schools often face severe shortages of age‑appropriate books, learning materials, and literacy resources. Children may attend school, but without access to the tools needed to develop strong literacy skills, their ability to learn and progress is limited. This is not a reflection of curiosity, intelligence, or ambition, it is a lack of access.

Literacy Lights exists to help change that.

Where Children Can Read, Learn, and Thrive

We believe children already carry curiosity, potential, and the desire to learn. Literacy does not create these qualities, it helps reveal and strengthen them.

At Literacy Lights, we support literacy in remote Cambodian schools by working alongside communities to remove barriers to meaningful education. Reading is the gateway to learning: it builds confidence, deepens understanding, and enables children to participate fully in their classrooms and communities.

Our approach is grounded in humility, respect, and partnership. We focus on small, thoughtful actions, like placing the right book in a child’s hands, because these can have lasting impact. By expanding access to literacy, we work toward a more equitable future where every child has the chance to read, learn, and shape their own life.

At Literacy Lights, we have seen the conditions and absence of basic education resources and believe that another generation of Cambodian children should have to face the same literacy challenges of their parents.

Currently the PNKS project team is focussing on the mose needy schools. At least 20 schools are in desperate need of books.

Most have no formal library space.

Great question. We prefer not to be involved in construction wherever possible.

However in some schools, their basic infrastructure is so lacking, that the construction of a library space, also provides an additional teaching space, which is critically needed.

When we identify schools required to hold classes in the open air, we work with the community to explore the construction of a library space.

Critically, these spaces are also available for community meetings.

Firstly, we identify those schools with the greatest need.

Then to ensure sustainability and care we prioritise those schools with an exisiting and strong School Management Committee.

School Management Committees consist of local community members who work to hold the school teachers and principal accountable, and work to improve and maintain the schools amenities.
